South African Jewelry Designer – Lauren Batchelor

Im very proud of this jewelry feature that I have put together and the reason why is because the post is all about a very good friend of mine, Lauren Batchelor. Lauren is a South African jewelry designer and I absolutely fell in love with her most recent jewelry collection. When I went to go see her exhibition, I immediately thought to myself , I have to do a feature on her as well as the inspiring collection she created. I have always said to many international fashion people that there is abundant hidden and unexposed talent in the fashion and jewelry industry in S.A and Lauren is without a doubt one of them! Im so happy to take the time to put together a feature on Lauren and her creations because in my opinion she is one incredibly talented jewelry designer who has so much success ahead of her for the near future!

Lauren is in fourth year of jewellery design at Durban University of Technology. She decided to study jewellery design and manufacturing because her father is a jeweller himself. Lauren’s inspiration for her work comes from the colours, shapes and textures one might find in nature, Primarily the sea. She uses techniques such as enamelling to portray the lovely cool colours of the sea, this also gives the jewellery a nice vitreous feeling to it. At the moment she has a collection which surrounds little ‘coral’ elements, and im hoping to continue with this concept in the future.

Eco item of the week

When I read about the dirty way jewelry is made and where the materials come from it makes me want to expose the waste and pain the different industries cause even further. Chances are the jewelry you are wearing right now has been made in an unethical way.

The market in eco jewelry has expanded providing us with choices. Beautiful eco jewelry is available and it is up to you to make the final decision.

As someone who loves to be creative in art and fashion design I have been creating pieces of jewelry/art myself. I hope to share them with you soon. I absolutely love the Great Gatsby theme, mainly because the designer resurrects vintage and broken pieces from the more interesting past.

,the collaboration between Juniper Rose and the always classic Donna Karen. Juniper Rose, fashion designer turned jewelry designer has started making jewelry after an attempt to write a book has inspired her. The characters in the book simply had to be decorated with elaborate pieces, which she has eventually created in real life. Juniper is a designer for Falconiere and her pieces for Donna Karen are obviously all chains, rhinestones and leather. Just the way we like it. Donna Karen spells a classic and since I do love the pieces so much (probably because they remind me of my own) I can only hope this style sticks around for a long time, if not forever. The collection comes out at the end of the month and prices range from $500 to $1000.

accessories. My unhealthy obsession with costume jewelry has made me start on a new project. The inspirations from Chanel are endless and I especially love their over the top chunky pieces. As I embark on a new creative mission I am sharing some images and videos, from the Paris-Moscow 2009 pre-fall collection and the 2010 cruise collection, that have helped to inspire me in moments of giving up. I promise to share more details in the future.

Litter Style it

A while back in June to celebrate the launch of a brand new le la Moda layout I featured Rachael Mann and Mackenzie Burdick as our It Girls. The Litter girls were in the middle of developing their jewelry line. Today they are being flown to New York for fashion week. Their jewelry was used to style and compliment the Christian Cota Spring/Summer 2010 line. The headpieces and body jewelry peeked delicately from under the collection and I am quite sure attracted new admirers.
